Urban League Announces 2008 Scholarship Recipients
On Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at 11:30 p.m., the Columbia Urban League hosted a reception for their 2008 Scholarship winners. The scholarships include the WWDM Brenda Jones Memorial Scholarship, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina-Columbia Urban League Scholarship, and the Bi-Lo Charities 2008 Urban League Scholarship. The reception was held at Cecil Tillis Center.
The WWDM Brenda Jones Memorial Scholarship was started in 1994 as an endowment by former WWDM owner and Columbia Urban League board member John Marshall. In 1996, the scholarship was renamed to commemorate the life of veteran news anchor Brenda Jones. The 2008 Brenda Jones Memorial Scholarship winner is Lindsey Elizabeth Dill. Miss Dill was the 2007-2008 editor-in-chief of the Chapin High School Newspaper in addition to being a South Carolina Junior Scholar. Miss Dill is a 2008 graduate of Chapin High School and plans to attend Lander University in the Fall as a Nursing Major.
As a part of their outstanding philanthropy efforts, BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina awards a scholarship to a graduating African American high school senior who resides in Allendale, Clarendon, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, Lexington, Newberry, or Richland counties. This year's BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina-Columbia Urban League Scholarship recipient is Larita Dingle. Miss Dingle, a 2008 graduate of Manning High School, was an active member of the Lady Monarchs varsity basketball team and the 2007-2008 Vice President of the Manning High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America. In the fall of 2008, Miss Dingle will be attending the University of South Carolina as a Pharmacy major.
For 17 years, BI-LO and the Urban League have partnered to provide over $680,000 in Urban League Scholarships. This year, BI-LO awarded two students with $2500 scholarships. "BI-LO is proud to celebrate the achievements of these students by honoring them with this scholarship," said Brian Hotarek, BI-LO President and CEO. "These students are shining examples of excellence and BI-LO is dedicated to empowering them, as they pursue their education." In addition to Columbia, BI-LO partners with Urban Leagues in Greenville, Spartanburg, Charlotte, Charleston, Chattanooga and the 100 Black Men of Augusta. A total of 15 scholarships are given each year. The first recipient of the Bi-Lo Charities 2008 Urban League Scholarship is Dominique Jordan; a 2008 Spring Valley High graduate. Along with being a Columbia Urban League Young and Gifted award recipient, Miss Jordan was also the 2007-2008 Spring Valley High School Student Body President. Miss Jordan will be attending Clemson University in the fall, majoring in political science. The second recipient of the Bi-Lo Charities 2008 Urban League Scholarship is Lettie Maxine Goldsberry; a 2008 graduate of Eau Claire High School. Miss Goldsberry interned with the 2007 Barrack Obama Campaign and was also a 2008 Columbia Urban League Young and Gifted Award recipient. She plans to attend Howard University in the fall as an advertising major.
The Columbia Urban League is dedicated to youth education and empowerment. Through college scholarships, the Urban League is doing its part to ensure that all children are well educated and prepared for the future.
