"I Am Woman" Community Health Workers honored at the United Way of the Midlands Volunteer Awards Ceremony

On April 19, 2012 United Way of the Midlands celebrated volunteers who are creating opportunities and inspiring hope for a better tomorrow.

The Community Impact Award was awarded to the I AM Woman, Community Health Workers for their service in the community as they help their neighbors learn how to navigate the health system to reach their individual health goals.   Each navigator oversees an identified group of participants and takes the lead in delivering the six-week workshop lessons and community health activities.

The Columbia Urban League’s I AM Woman community health program is a nutrition and health initiative created to educate and empower African-American women ages 18 and older with the tools and resources to reach their maximum potential and become life-time managers of their health and wellness. The Community Health Workers are a vital component of the program and work to get their communities healthy.
