Juveniles Overcoming Barriers to Success (J.O.B.S.) Program
The Columbia Urban League J.O.B.S. Program is a school-based substance abuse prevention and early intervention program that prevents and reduces substance use and abuse among high risk, multi-problem adolescents placed in alternative schools. This year-round program operates at Richland School District One’s Olympia Learning Center.
The J.O.B.S. Program builds on the findings research aimed at reducing risk factors and enhancing protective factors. Students are taught the dangers of experimenting with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. In addition, students are taught leadership skills, decision making skills, stress and anger management, problem solving, and resistance to peer pressure. Counselors primarily work with adolescents individually and in small groups. During the summer months, program participants are involved in the League’s youth employment programs.
It serves middle and high school students and receives funding from the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services.
