Summer Work Experience Leadership Program

During the summer, the majority of young people in the community are relaxing at home while their parents are out working. Although some teens are fine with taking it easy, others are out looking for employment to keep themselves occupied. While searching for their potential job, some teens may find it harder than others to get employed. The Columbia Urban League has a beneficial solution to the problem.

The Summer Work Experience Leadership Program (SWELP) helps students develop leadership skills and build character. For more than 15 years, SWELP has been one of the best in its class as far as providing employment opportunities to teens. The urban league says the summer programs is a very influential instrument in teaching adolescents job survival skills such as setting goals, conflict management, and effective verbal and non-verbal communication.

The program also helps young people stay out of the streets - away from gangs and violence. James T. McLawhorn of the Columbia Urban League says, "We've got to be more engaged as a community. It's going to take all of us. No one can solve this problem. The Urban League cannot solve this problem. Law enforcement cannot solve this problem. The church cannot solve this problem. Parents cannot solve this problem. But we can solve it working together."

To be eligible for this program, students must be 14 - 19 years old and complete the application process. Applications will be available starting May 1st. Applications MUST picked up from our office at the address below.
