DR. GLORIA SWINDLER BOUTTE is currently a full professor at Benedict College and is the founder and principal investigator for the statewide Center of Excellence for the Education and Equity of African American Students (CEEEAAS), which she writes about in her article. In Fall, 2007, she will be returning to the University of South Carolina as a tenured faculty member, but will continue to consult with Benedict College.
For over two decades, Dr. Gloria Swindler Boutte’s research, scholarship, teaching, and service have focused on families and students of color and school/community/home coalitions. Dr. Gloria Swindler Boutte is the author of Multicultural Education: Raising Consciousness and Resounding Voices: School Experiences of People From Diverse Ethnic Backgrounds. She has received over $1,000,000 in grants and has published more than 40 articles on educating students of color. Her published works have been reprinted and are widely cited. Additionally, she has presented nationally and internationally (on every continent -- except Antarctica) on curriculum, instruction, and diversity issues. Dr. Boutte earned her Ph.D. in Educational Research from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Science degree in Child Development from Iowa State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Johnson C. Smith University. She has taught at South Carolina State University, the University of South Carolina where she received early tenure, and at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she was also tenured.
Dr. Boutte was named Benedict College’s recipient of the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities Excellence in Teaching Award for 2006-2007. She has served on editorial boards for educational journals and is active with several professional organizations. She has an adult daughter, Stephanie; a middle school son, Jonathan; and twin, toddler granddaughters, Jaliyah and Janiyah.
