News Media

The news media have been addressed in several editions of The State of Black South Carolina. An early focus was the inadequate number of African American journalists in local media (Davis, 1990). Attention then turned to the representation of African Americans in the news media (Campbell & Wiggins, 1993; Campbell, Duhe, & Wiggins, 1996). Over the years we have seen an improvement in both areas, with The State newspaper consistently having African Americans among its management team and editorial board, local television stations having African Americans among its on-air reporters and anchors. The local news media also present a more balanced picture of the African American community although challenges with regard to accurate representation remain (Campbell, 2000; Wiggins, 2000b).
